Customizable safety training courses
Instructor fits lessons to industry, job site, students
Before making the transition to corporate safety about ten years ago, Ian McCabe spent many years working in front-line operational roles in a variety of industries. It's this experience that gives him a deep understanding of how workers think and why they act the way they do.
Today, Ian is a well-respected safety trainer, in high demand by companies across western Canada for his practical, hands-on, trainer-led courses.
One advantage of trainer-led courses over correspondence or computer-based programs is the instructor can adapt every lesson to the needs of individual businesses. He can spend more or less time on the various topics, depending on how well the participants are catching on to certain concepts.
Beyond that, Ian customizes his established courses to reflect specific industries and job sites.
Field visits
A site visit to the client's location is often beneficial. An informal inspection and assessment of the site is very useful and necessary to understand the work processes, identify potentially hazardous activities and locate areas where practical exercises might be carried out as part of the safety training. Along with interviewing key personnel and identifying essential issues and incident histories, the root causes will be explored whenever possible. Documentation such as safety meeting minutes, incident/near miss reports and safety milestones may be requested for review. (All files will be returned or copies destroyed.)
Time and operational considerations permitting, observation will also be used to assess body positioning and body mechanics, where individuals are using the body as a lever or tool.
With permission, and only where it's safe to do so, photos and videos of the site will be taken, with respect to individual rights. Copyright is held by the photographer. Permit restrictions will be complied with, where applicable.
